The big exhibition in Nafplio is extended until Sunday, November 3, 2024.

This is the first collaboration between FOUGARO ARTCENTER and the Benaki Museum. The exhibition is dedicated to the work of the sculptor Yiannis Pappas and to the iconic male horse of Alexander the Great, which has been located since 2019 at the junction of Vas streets. The exhibition entitled “Yiannis Pappas | looking for Alexander” focuses on the creative process of the realization of the masterful sculptural ensemble, which lasted 32 years. With the first trials of Yannis Pappas beginning in 1941, the work was cast in bronze in 1973. In this exhibition, the public will have the opportunity for the first time to follow the long path of completing the sculpture through drawings, studies, prototypes, photographs and documents from the archive of the Yannis Pappas Laboratory, with the largest volume of exhibits never before

Without having received an order, Yannis Pappas began to edit the work within the Occupation. Over three decades, he systematically and persistently investigated every
detail of the work, through ancient sculptures and mosaics with representations of Alexander, making in-depth anatomical studies of horses from the natural world, design studies of nightmarish statues of the Renaissance and, of course, endless tests, in search of the ideal result.

Eventually, Yiannis Pappas's love for man led to Alexander's portrayal not as an armed conqueror, but as an ambassador of Greekness at the ends of the then known world. The Greek who was worshiped as a god and is engaged in art and science to this day was masterfully immortalized as a humanist symbol, after the exciting search for a great artist.
