The summer tour of the show “The Sea and the Old Man” comes to an end on Tuesday, September 17, after a successful run throughout Greece. It is an original adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's classic play, directed by Marlene Kaminski, produced by Dimitris Fotopoulos IKE Theatrical Productions and starring Tasos Noussia.
The play “The Sea and the Old Man” is based on Ernest Hemingway's novel “The Old Man and the Sea”, which won the Pulitzer Prize and earned the author the Nobel Prize in Literature. The story is considered a masterpiece of world literature and is compared with the epics of Homer.
It tells the adventure of the fisherman Santiago, played by Tasos Nousias, as he travels through the vast waters of the sea. There, he meets an impressive blue marlin, which he manages to fish after 84 days without success. The fish is very strong and Santiago is unable to kill it, as a result of which he drags him to the depths of the sea for three days and nights. He eventually kills it, but the sharks devour his prey on the return. Through this simple narrative, rich symbolisms emerge about human endurance, the search for meaning, and man's conflict with nature.
Santiago's young apprentice, Manolino, played by Vasilis Milionis, plays a crucial role in connecting the past, present and future, as he dreams and imagines fishing with his mentor.
The dancer Phaedra Soutou embodies the figure of the Sea, accompanied by the voice of Evelyn Assouad, adding a contemporary interpretation and spiritual dimension to the work.
The show explores the idea of “self emergence” through hard contact with nature, highlighting the liberation of the human spirit.
