The film tells the story of one day and ten years in the life of Maria, a young woman who starts her adult life with the best of intentions - passing into law, falling madly in love and marrying a handsome, young sailor - only to wake up ten years later with three children, her family's store mired in horrific debt that leads to her mother commits suicide, in a country torn apart at the height of the economic crisis, and her constantly absent husband cheats on her with women and men he meets on his travels.
Catalyzed by the aggressive behavior of her jealous sister and her fascist son-in-law, Maria rebels. She makes a deal with a large construction company and forces her father to set fire to the forest of his village in exchange for money. She boards her children in a car and leaves them to her sister who is evident that she cannot take care of them. She beats her son-in-law and threatens him that if he hurts her children while she is away, he will come back and kill him. She throws away her cell phone when her husband calls her, who anxiously embarks on a hurried journey from Hamburg back to Athens.
