Carles Batlle was born in Barcelona in 1963 and is a playwright and theater critic. He teaches theatre in Barcelona, at the Autonomous University and the Theatre Institute, and runs the theatre magazine Pausa. From 2004 to 2009 he was director of the Sala Becket Laboratory, Spain's most important centre for dramatic writing. His writings are characterized by the constant search for a modern form and language. Its themes are dominated by the issues of identity, the foreigner, his integration into the host country, but also the behavior of the host country towards him, cultural conflict, memory, war and the generation gap. Among his works stand out: Temptation, staged in 2004 at the National Theater of Catalonia and the Burgtheater in Vienna, marked a brilliant career in France and Germany and translated into 10 languages, Combat (1995-1998), published and staged in various countries of Europe and America), Suite (Prize of the Association of Spanish Gods Playwrights, 1999), translated and published in French and Italian, Oasis (2001) Josep Amatller Prize 2002, Trànsits (2006-07), also translated into several languages, and Barcelona, as nostalgia (2008), translated into Greek by the Catalan theatre translation team Els de Paros, and was awarded the prestigious Born Award in 2008. Batlie's most recent play is Zoom (2010).
