The City Council Roumeli this summer presents a hilarious comedy from the 19th century, which exudes the whole atmosphere of old urban Athens. “Hair Kouvaria”, a work by Nikolaos Laskaris, was first presented to the Athenian public in 1899. A farce that has nothing to envy from the best French bullfighters of the time. The play will be presented in central Greece, in the region of Athens and Thessaloniki. First stop, the Summer Municipal Theater of Lamia on July 5 and 6.
The City Council Roumelis recalls the classic theatrical codes of farce. The old “bourgeois” theatrical language and “salon acting” are revived in a vintage performance, “as it should”, different, like cool granite. Stormy dialogues, repeated misunderstandings, marital jealousies, in a work worthy of the elaborate boulevards of French dramaturgy. Set in the Belle Époque era, the show takes us to another time in Athens, where people were manifesting their thirst for “sweet life” just before the start of the Balkan Wars.
The crazy case: What happens when a respectable married man, has to leave for secret business, under the eyes of a jealous wife? What role does the secret soothsayer who reads hairs and discovers erotic desires play? How do three good friends and their husbands get involved? And how does a bunch of misunderstandings unravel through a series of hilarious episodes?
