There is no worse miser in the whole of Smyrna than Exintavelon. The rich widower not only deprives his children and servants of even food, but, in order to increase his fortune even more, sets up the most extravagant and mismatched marriages for himself and his children. Fortunately for everyone, the servant, who has suffered the pandinas from his stinginess, will provide the solution by hitting the notorious chipmunk at his most sensitive point The Exitavellone by Konstantinos Economou, written in Smyrna in 1816. The play, one of the most important of the modern Greek Enlightenment, is the Greek metaphor of Mollier's Filargyros, but it conquers its theatrical conceit through the flowing idiomatic language, the spartan recognizable characters and the comic episodes, which adapt to the familiar - and timeless - evils of the newly created of the Greek state.
