The Drama School of the National Theater was founded in 1930 and operated simultaneously with the National Theater. In its more than 80 years of operation, it has endowed the Hellenic Theatre with important actors and protagonists. Students of the School were Dimitris Horn, Mary Aroni, Vaso Manolidou, Nikos Tzogias, Melina Mercouri, Thanos Kotsopoulos, Alexis Solomos, Stelios Vokovic, Nikos Kourkoulos, Anna Synodinou and others. Many of them taught at the Faculty, whose teaching level was and still is very high. The school also taught great intellectual figures of the Greek theatre: Dimitris Rodiris, Katina Paxinou, Takis Mouzenidis, Angelos Terzakis, Tasos Lignadis, Yiannis Sideris, Aimilios Chourmouzios and others. Since the student year 2018-2019, the Drama School of the National Theatre has been expanded with the establishment of the Department of Directing, meeting an old and important need for the artistic education of contemporary theatre professionals. Thus, in parallel with the Department of Acting, the Department of Directing now operates within the Faculty, with the aim of the theoretical and practical training of young directors, so that after the end of their studies they can staff the Greek theatrical landscape, conversing adequately with the constantly evolving social and theatrical reality.
