“Oedipus - Second Excavation” at the Ancient Theatre of Mieza
Ancient Theatre of Mieza - Saturday 25 August 2018 - Start time 19:30 The Ephorate of Antiquities of Imathia in collaboration with the Municipality of Naoussa present the production of the Philippi Festival within the framework of the 2nd International Laboratory of Ancient Drama “Oedipus — Excavation II” at the Ancient Theatre of Mieza. On the evening of August 25, two actors, a director and a dancer conduct a reading - excavation of Sophocles' leading tragedy “Oedipus the Tyrant”. We are not going to solve the enigma of Oedipus, we only want to look for the elements of the tragic in its authentic source. We're trying to figure out where the deeper meaning of the thing is. We try to tell the story more with hands and sweat than with words. In the way that handymen might call it; the workers and archaeologists who, a century ago, were bent on discovering the history of this place. And what are the texts? By digging through them, you understand two or three things. And these in turn teach us and remind us that we know almost nothing. Mieza was a small town in rural Imathia, built at the foot of Vermion in the middle of the road that connected Aigai, the royal metropolis of the Macedonians with Pella, the Macedonian port on the northern coast of Thermaikos, which in the first half of the 4th century BC had developed significantly, resulting in the development of the city. This is the second residence of the royal family. The geographical location and the paradisiacal landscape with its rich meadows, deep forests and many waters are perhaps the reason why Philip II chose Mieza to establish there the school where Aristotle would teach his son and successor Alexander the Great, as well as the children of the Ephesians men who were destined to become the elite and staff all the offices of the state.
