A movie-manual of escape by Babis Makridis. 9 Steps to Becoming a Bird Which is the first? Break your egg. A hybrid film, at the border of documentary, fiction and political fiction, by filmmaker Babis Makridis of “L” (Sundance Film Festival 2012) and “Pity” (Sundance Film Festival 2018, Best Film Award of the Greek Film Academy 2019). The film “The Birds or how to be one” is inspired by the archetypal myth of Aristophanes and the “Hens”, the performance of Nikos Karathanos and its actors, filming them offstage, in real spaces and natural landscapes — from the meadows volcanic lava in Iceland to the highlands of Patagonia and from Times Square to the pyramids of Egypt. Everything happens in a fluid universe of “everyday life”, between theatre people, ornithologists and thymosophic hermits, who — all of them — dream of flying. The film premiered at the Voices Section of the Rotterdam festival.
