The experimental theater group grasshopper repeats from February 12 to March 13 the performance of the play Ivanov, by Anton Chekhov, for only ten midnight performances at the Chora Theater, after its successful run at the Arti Theater. Ivanov (1887 and 1889), although Chekhov's first theatrical work, is more than the prototype of a later great dramatist — it is an open quarry from which all the materials (persons, subjects, conventions) of the Czech dramaturgy of maturity are extracted. The show, directed by the 22-year-old Dimitris Karantzas, masterfully orchestrates the familiar Tsechofic “troupe” (the anti-hero in crisis, the cynical fallen aristocrat, the adventurer kulakos, the idealistic doctor, the full of momentum new girl, the couple suffocating in the context of their marriage, etc.), and consciously avoiding any attempt at realistic representation and atmospheric staging, intensifies the chorality, musicality and fragility of the text. With a new adaptation, modern costumes and underground music, Ivanov's performance at the Chora Theater reads Chekhov with a refreshing mood, as befits the young composition of the troupe (all graduates of the drama school “front-theater workshop”). The action takes place in the space of an endless, forced party, where all persons meet without exception and from which they cannot escape, bound by social conventions and victims of an inexorable boredom. Until one of them can't take it anymore and is “excluded”...
