On the 2nd floor of the historic neoclassical building that once housed the famous “Vourloumis raisin warehouses”, actress Eleni Karamouzi creates a new center of multi-action culture, based on the theater. A new space in the center of Patras, overlooking the sea and plenty of light.
Theatrical performances, concerts, exhibitions, dance, music and theater classes, seminars, book presentations and special screenings are just some of the activities that make up the mosaic of events of the new “floor” theater.
Faithful to the industrial aesthetic of the space that removes the boundaries between stage and square and with a mood of extroversion and cooperation, the “floor” theater aspires to be an open space of art and culture for the inhabitants of Patras and beyond. With a youthful, alternative, pioneering and experimental character, with a contemporary perspective and in constant dialogue with the local community, Athens, Greece and the rest of the world.
The uniform morphology of the “upstairs” theater allows it to accommodate at least 200 people at each event, which makes the space particularly flexible. It is worth mentioning that in the middle he firmly dominates a piano, “breaking” the industrial convention of the landscape when he displays it
The history of the building
The Vourloumi raisin factory was established at the intersection of Othonos Amalia and Three Admirals streets in 1890. In the process it developed into a large raisin export house, the Vourloumis house, which was the centre of all the imported nut trade in England. The Vourloumi complex consists of a ground floor building and a three-storey building with stonework, which was built to give a roof to the “black gold” of the time, namely the currant. It is worth noting that this place hosted 142 refugees after the Asia Minor Catastrophe in 1922, and to this day the cast iron railings with the owner's monogram inset in the center are very characteristic.
