Diamanto has her suspicions about this marriage, but she cannot express them openly and remains in the role of observer. The wedding takes place, and Golden is unaware of her father-in-law's sick appetites.
Diamanto now has to contend with the closed patriarchal society but also with her role as a mother. She does not want to bitter her son by revealing his father's ill feelings, she does not want to lose her husband and of course she does not even think about the possibility of catching her in his mouth in the village.
Time passes and the landowner's son leaves as a soldier. The father-in-law repeatedly rapes his daughter-in-law, who becomes pregnant. When she brings the baby into the world, there are complications. Shortly before she dies, she confesses her secret to the priest in order to save her child, who she fears will be killed by her in-laws in order to cover up the pregnancy that has occurred, with her husband far away.
When the son returns, everyone comes to face their responsibilities. Years later, Diamanto, desolate and alone, still struggles with her guilt, unable to find peace within herself...
“Illegal Love” is based on the eponymous short story written by Konstantinos Theotokis in 1906.
