Yannis Lignadis's theatrical text, which is a compilation of historical events, anthologized from the first five books of the History of the Peloponnesian War, attempts to highlight the timeless and universal essence of the “tragedy of war”, the dark and complex mechanisms behind the war phenomenon. The show attempts to be a fruitful lesson: on a cognitive level, combining knowledge of ancient historical discourse with contemporary political thought; on an entertaining level, communicating the tragic emotions produced by war violence. The war episodes of the dramatic composition contain the siege and fall of the martyr Plataea, the civil war in Corfu, the battles of Pylos and Sfakteria, the destruction of Milos. The war events and other dramatic events are combined, among other things, with the epitaph speech of Pericles, the plague in Athens, speeches by political protagonists and contemplative crises of the historian. The translation consistently adheres to the letter and spirit of the original writing. At the same time, the theatricality (in terms of form) and the drama (in terms of the inherent emotion) of the text are highlighted. The historical material of the dramatic narrative is “selected” with a musical score, which introduces modern semantic accents and a sharper dramatic feeling to the historical writing.
